rosecrans

mentioned awhile ago that we went to my grandfather's military funeral in San Diego. I did not know him well and my mom mostly only knew him in her adult life, through my parents' continual efforts to reach out to him.

He was a World War II veteran and was buried at the beautiful Rosecrans National Cemetery. It is a stunning and reverent place and the service was very nice. My dad gave the eulogy. He spoke about forgiveness and it was perfect.
After the funeral, my parents and siblings and all the cousins went to the Mormon Battalion Historic Site in Old Town San Diego.
The kids really enjoyed panning for gold. They were pretty sure the nuggets they found were worth some serious money.
The 2 years olds were only interested in soaking themselves.
It was a very quick trip, but some good memories were made.

but that IS my good smile

We headed back to San Diego this past weekend - this time with the whole family. It was a drive-on-Friday, come-home-on Saturday kind of trip for a memorial service for my grandfather, who passed away recently. I did not know him well, but the military service was lovely and I'm glad we were there. I will post photos of the beautiful national cemetery, etc. eventually.

Friday night, we went with the cousins and Nana and Papa to the Mormon Battalion visitors center in Old Town San Diego. It is a must-see. The kids really enjoyed the interactive movie and panning for gold. They kept saying "this is the best vacation ever!" and "can we come here again?" I am not sure if Owen was trying to convey that elation, or some sinister plan, in this photo. But evidently, there are no retakes on the Mormon Battalion's watch.

i don't know what to name this post

The funeral for my mother-in-law's husband was really nice. It was a funeral, which, by definition, is never "really nice," but Ron was loved by so many and it was touching to hear inspiring stories from his children and close friends. He is dearly missed. And we are deeply saddened for Mark's mom.

Mark's sisters, Erin and April, flew in from Canada for the funeral and I decided I should finish my nephew's quilt so I could send it home with April.  Her baby, Charles Golden, is one year!  We will meet him next month when April brings all the kids down for a more relaxed visit.
I can't get enough of these blue fabrics by American Jane. Literally. They are not in print anymore, and it's becoming difficult to find leftovers on the internet. I have used this line on many quilts for friends and family.  Also for the quilt I made for the school auction, which someone got for a steal.  Can I blame it on the lousy economy?

The pattern is Camille's "Abundance."

Model is from our in-house agency.

1936 - 2011

Earlier this week, Mark's stepfather passed away unexpectedly. He was a good good man: kind, intelligent, gospel-centered.   He served quietly, faithfully in his community and church, and cared more about others' needs than his own.  We will miss him.
