painful haircuts

Last week I decided George's hair needed some attention. It is no surprise that my dull hair clippers and lack of hair cutting skills are no match for George's resistant thrashing, as indicated by his uneven front bangs. (I've been letting them grow out for months now.) I usually buzz Hank myself, but since I was already committed to go elsewhere, he got to come too.

So off to Great Clips we went. Just me and the boys. Hank went first and he held his sucker tightly, for comfort, not taste. The quiet tears flowed and he let me know he was not happy, but he was mostly cooperative, by comparison.

Then it was George's turn. He flailed and he wailed . It took me and two stylists to hold him down. We were the center of all of Great Clips' attention for a good 8 minutes. A little 5 year old boy in the lobby walked over and insisted we "stop hurting that little boy!" I felt like mother of the year.
It is actually pretty impressive that his hair turned out respectably. Before we started, the stylist (is that what they're called?) wanted to use scissors because I didn't want his hair super short. What? Scissors on an apprehensive 2 year old! Are you kidding? Of course, I convinced her to use her longest guard and blending skills instead. I have to give her credit for working her magic and being so patient.

When it was all over, Hank and George happily ate their suckers and happily waved goodbye to the whole occupancy of Great Clips. And everyone (staff and customers) happily (thankfully) waved us on our way.

good mail

I really love mail. Not junk mail or bills, obviously. But mail addressed to me in someone's own handwriting. Yesterday was a good mail day. I received a small package from my talented friend, Kara. I have known Kara for less than a year. We met through our husbands. But I have gotten to know her well from an initial night out to dinner and then following her fun blog. She is easy-going and ambitious. Darling and smart. Kara recently hosted a giveaway - just because. And I was the lucky winner of one of her custom jewelry pieces! This girl's got skills. Look what she made just for me.
And then she threw this beauty in, as a bonus. Just because.
Thanks Kara! I love both necklaces - they are stunning.
And here's something another friend gave me yesterday: short blunt bangs. I don't know how to do short bangs. (When I've done this before, I end up growing them out into a more side-swept bang.) I'm hoping they will relax {read: lay flat} after a few days of training. And grow just a titch. And I look 12-ish. Other than that, I like them a lot. Thank you Leisel!
And Leisel, you are a magician with my grays.

90 bucks

When my sister, Emily, was about 15, she found herself needing some new clothes and a new do. I remember being appalled when my mom GAVE HER $90 in which to buy these items. That was a lot of money circa 1990! Since I had my own money from summer jobs, I pretty much paid for my own clothes and didn't get such nice handouts.*
My brother, Neil, made up a rap about Emily and her new found cash. {Yeah, it was that big a deal at our house.} He chanted,
"She gots ninety bucks for a haircut and clothes"
{"gots" is rapper lingo.}
She got a cute new cut and some swanky clothes and she deserved it.
Especially since I wasn't very good at sharing my clothes with her. The long and short of it is I always think of the Emily Rap when I get my hair cut, as I did this last week. stacked with bangs. And for much less than 90 bucks. Thanks Leisel.
Neil or Emily, do you remember the rest of that rap?

*um, I'm going to hear about that one.

hair and such

Emily's blog inspired me to be OK with my non-inspired blogging mode lately. Lots of blogging thoughts about not much.
1. I think it's time to cut my hair short-ish. It took a long time to grow it out and I've never had my hair this long. But I really want to cut it cute and Katie Holmes-ish - maybe. I have already had cuts sort of similar to this. Funny how I never looked that good. That's why I grew it out in the first place.
2. I missed THE OFFICE last night and that's OK 'cause we're finishing up disc one of season 3. When do reruns air? I LOVE the pam/jim storyline. For Mark, it's the worst part of the show.
3. Why is everyone so preoccupied/fascinated with Edward and what's his name? C'mon, are the books really that compelling?
4. I don't think Georgia Yukon is a very marketable rockstar name.
5. I forgot my bff-Jen-since-2nd-grade's birthday (July 20), and I feel bad 'cause we have emailed and talked several times since then and I have never mentioned it. Pretty lame to send a card at this point. So sorry!
6. Looking forward to GC.
7. Looking forward to seeing my sisters soon.
8. If we didn't reside in the hot hot heat, I would really consider a black car. Very sharp and would promote a better/more frequent car wash routine.
9. I am feeling some serious motivation to buy new boots. And jackets. It IS fall right? I am happy to be heading to UT (are you guys wearing your muck lucks yet?), Lake Tahoe and Seattle soon so I can layer and justify fall/winter purchases.
10. I am SOOOOOO not a fan of Katie Holmes. Just the hair. What is that girl thinking?
